Why There Are Words like Sugar

On December 8, 2016 I was honored to be included in the line-up at the Sausalito institution, Why There Are Words.  Peg Alford Pursell and her crew put on a fantastic event at the charming Studio 333 every month.  The theme of the night was “Sugar” and there were plenty of bittersweet, tasty and even shocking moments. Several of the people I read with were, like me, winners or finalists in the Best Small Fictions 2016 anthology edited by Stuart Dybek with Tara Masih (Queen’s Ferry Press, 2016), such as the inimitable Grant Faulkner (known for his 100-word stories), Kristie Letter (what a great name for a writer!), and Jonathan Cardew (flash fiction with stunning imagery). Also reading that night were Russell Dillon (powerful poetry), Matt Hart (punk poet), and Christine Hale (whose memoir of meditation, writing and family troubles is now on my shelf).

Despite a few technical difficulties (low light and a mic with a bedtime before the end of my story), it’s great to have a video record of the reading.

I plan to be at the 7th anniversary celebration of Why There Are Words at the same venue in January — to listen, not read, this time. Hope to see you there.
